Junior Fair Board

(jōōn’yĕr fâr bōrd) Along with conducting daily contests at the fair, the Junior Fair Board performs community service around the fairgrounds such as beach clean-ups, assisting at various functions, and serving as ambassadors to the fairgrounds. You might have seen this group around the fair in their bright red shirts!

About the Department

The Junior Fair Board was established in the 1970’s to provide young adults with an opportunity to develop leadership skills, perform community service and become aware of the business and operations of Agricultural District Fairs. The 20 member board is eager to put on contests such as: pie eating, karaoke, watermelon eating, adult showmanship, hog calling and where’s waldo? The Junior Fair Board term starts in January and continues throughout the year and represents six cities across the county. The members are between the ages of 15-20 and compete for a spot on the board starting with an application, letter of recommendation and an interview. They meet once a month from January until July, then meet daily at the Ventura County Fair to conduct their contests that they have worked long and hard to perfect.

Superintendent
Heidi Ortiz

Hello, my name is Heidi Ortiz. I graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. I joined the Ventura County Fairgrounds staff and became a Junior Fair Board advisor in 2010. Being an advisor has made me realize how invaluable the Junior Fair Board experience is to young adults because not only do they learn skills such as leadership, commitment and responsibility, they get to be an important part of putting on an event for our community. We welcome new members every year, so if you are interested please feel free to apply. See you at the Fair!

Superintendent
Chris Garmon

Hello, my name is Chris Garmon. I served on the Junior Fair Board for 7 years starting in 1997 and in 2004 I became an advisor, guiding these young adults. Each year, we are eager to start to see what new and exciting ideas the 20 members can come up with. Stop by one of our events and don’t be afraid to ask us how to get involved.
