About the Department
In the game Twenty Questions, the first thing you ask is “Is it animal, vegetable, or mineral?” Well, it’s a good question, because anything that didn’t come from a plant or an animal probably came from a mineral. The bricks of your school building, the glass in your windows, the chalk you draw with- none would exist without minerals. Minerals are also essential in science and industry, for everything from computer circuits to diamond drills. Apart from their utility, beautiful and precious gems cut from mineral crystals give us pleasure to wear or just look at. Minerals are our most valuable and widely used natural commodities.
We hope you will join us this year by entering your own gems and minerals in the 2010 Ventura County Fair. You will be proud to share these beautiful gems and minerals with the community and you may even win an award! |

Superintendent
Laura Grayson
Having lived in Ventura County for 17 years, Laura Grayson has been volunteering at the Ventura County Fair from the beginning. Laura has been passionate about the Hobbies, Models and Collections & Gem and Mineral departments ever since she was recruited to help that first summer by her next door neighbor. As she became active in the Oxnard Gem and Mineral society and their exciting hobbies and classes she quickly started to enjoy the fun of being a contestant, with the opportunity to enter her newly learned crafts into the friendly competitions the fair had to offer. These crafts included beading, cab and jewelry making, silver work and several others. But Laura soon discovered that her favorite hobby of all was the chance to get to know the volunteers and other contestants and to see the variety of what they brought in from year to year.
Before she new it, Laura and her family became annual volunteers and/or staff of the Gem and Mineral & Hobbies, Models and Collections department. After several years as a committed volunteer, Laura then served as Assistant Superintendent for a few years and is now serving her first year as Superintendent. She is excited to continue serving with the AWESOME volunteers that have been dedicated to this department for over 100 years collectively. Without the help and dedication of this great team, we would not be one of the most fun and exciting departments to visit at the Fair.
