About the Department
Working on Hobbies and collecting unique items serves a wide range of purposes and functions. Hobbies and Collections train the eye, create a sense of order, and help develop aesthetic appreciation. Hobbyists and Collectors can be characterized by their joyful dedication to their projects. The world of hobbies and collections can be social when hobbyists and collectors share their pleasure with each other and their neighbors and friends. The Ventura County Fair offers the pride of showing and the pleasure of seeing others’ hobbies and collections, as well as an opportunity to exchange experience and advice. Who knows? A new collection of Blue Ribbons may be your reward! |

Superintendent
Laura Grayson
Having lived in Ventura County for 17 years, Laura Grayson has been volunteering at the Ventura County Fair from the beginning. Laura has been passionate about the Hobbies, Models and Collections & Gem and Mineral departments ever since she was recruited to help that first summer by her next door neighbor. As she became active in the Oxnard Gem and Mineral society and their exciting hobbies and classes she quickly started to enjoy the fun of being a contestant, with the opportunity to enter her newly learned crafts into the friendly competitions the fair had to offer. These crafts included beading, cab and jewelry making, silver work and several others. But Laura soon discovered that her favorite hobby of all was the chance to get to know the volunteers and other contestants and to see the variety of what they brought in from year to year.
Before she new it, Laura and her family became annual volunteers and/or staff of the Gem and Mineral & Hobbies, Models and Collections department. After several years as a committed volunteer, Laura then served as Assistant Superintendent for a few years and is now serving her first year as Superintendent. She is excited to continue serving with the AWESOME volunteers that have been dedicated to this department for over 100 years collectively. Without the help and dedication of this great team, we would not be one of the most fun and exciting departments to visit at the Fair.
