About the Department
You’ll have a whale of a time competing in this year’s Fishes and Friends department at the Ventura County Fair!. The department hosts many contests during the fair including the “ugliest fish”, “most popular” and “fair theme”.

2001 is our 3rd year in our beautiful new home in the center of the Fair and things around here are going swimmingly! The building has added decorations by “Sea and Things” to give you that special “fish” ambiance. Cichlids, Angel Fish, Goldfish, Tetras, salt water tanks and more; if you raise fish, we welcome you to dive into this competition! Aquarium designs are an art form unto themselves; we couldn’t tank you enough for entering yours. And if you area a turtle tamer we welcome you to enter your turtle or tortoise on the 2nd weekend of the Fair for prizes, ribbons, trophies.

The staff and volunteers are always ready to assist you and make your participation at the fishes and friends department an enjoyable and fun experience.

MEET THE DEPARTMENTS

Superintendent
Kevin Horvath
My name is Kevin Horvath. My hobbies include restoring old cars, camping, gardening and fishing. I have served as Superintendent of the Fishes and Friends Department for 14 years.

I was an exhibitor in the floriculture department in the garden displays in the early 1990’s until I became a superintendent of the fishes and friends department. In 1995 I restored all of the antique oak display cases in the Youth Department.

I also worked with Jenny Carr-Kenny in decorating the Home-Arts building in a western theme town for the divisions.

Fishes and Friends was originally called the Aquariums Department but when then turtles and turtoises competition was added a contest was given to rename the department. Thus the new name, Fishes and Friends. I was fortunate enough to take over this department from its creator, Hal Beavers. Hal’s vision to have an aquarium department was a novel idea as there were no other Aquarium Departments at any of the fairs in the State of California and to this day we still offer the only world class competition for fishes and friends.

The Department is made up of a few staff and lots of volunteers. Bobby Amerson has been with the department for over 12 years and serves as the Assistant Superintendent.
Marge Stocks has been with the Department for many years and as provided a lot of support in many areas.
