Fair Memories: Small Garden Yields Big Rewards
Date Posted: 1/2/2008

I wanted to share my little story. We live in a humble, little mobile-home, not that there's anything wrong with that, but when you live in a home as we do there's not a lot of farming room if you know what I mean. When we moved here there was a little tiny "dirt space" at the back of the house that I decided I could grown just about whatever I wanted. In our 10x12 space - I could grow 2 varieties of grapes (for our bird -she loves them, a blueberry bush would be nice, some green beans, yellow beans, squash, tomato's, hot peppers, carrots, pickling cucumbers, peas, bunching onions and radishes. I was sure I could do it all in this small space of ours! Oh... and down the side of our place... watermelons and pumpkins, surely if I move some decorative rock and plant the seeds they'll grow, and I can't forget the white corn field I have in a 8x8 space that I fondly call "the back forty". YES. everything in our garden grows! I want everyone who thinks that they just don't have enough room to grow anything ----YOU DO!!! Besides enjoying the bountiful fruit of our labor, I also convinced myself that I was going to win a ribbon at the Ventura County Fair. To which I proudly can say I'm in possession of 4 RIBBONS. First Place - Acorn Squash, Second Place - Acorn Squash, Second Place - Scallop Squash, Third Place Scallop Squash and finally Honorable mention for our Bunching Onions. What a great experience this whole process has been!

I love the Ventura County Fair, see you again next year!
