Happy 200th Birthday American Agricultural Fairs!
1811 - 2011
In September 1811 the first modern agricultural fair was held, attracting some three or four thousand farmers and townspeople in Berkshire, Massachussetts. With refreshments, speeches, a parade, livestock, competition for valuable premiums and even some primitive rides the fair ran for two days in the village square. After that first year the farmers' wives brought garden produce and home arts, making the fair a family event and giving birth to the pattern of fairs that continues today.
